How to create teams and sub-teams in Clarion

Create teams and sub-teams in Clarion, add members, and order them in the sidebar so each department runs its own milestones, metrics and hub.

A team in Clarion is a group of people with its own hub, metrics, challenges and milestones. Most companies have one team per department, all sitting under Leadership. Only Owners and Admins can create teams or change who is on them.

Create a team

  1. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Company Settings.
  2. Open Teams.
  3. Type a name in New team name….
  4. Choose a parent team from the dropdown. If you leave it alone, the new team sits under Leadership, your default team.
  5. Click Create Team.

To build a deeper structure, create the department first, then create its sub-teams with the department as the parent. Sub-teams are indented under their parent in the list.

Add people to a team

  1. In Teams, click the team to expand it. You’ll see how many milestones, metrics, syncs and challenges it has.
  2. Choose someone from Add a member… and click Add.
  3. To take someone off the team, click the trash icon next to their name.

Only people already in the company appear in the list — invite them first. You can also manage teams person by person: in Team & Permissions, click a member’s row and switch teams on or off under Team Membership.

How teams show up in the sidebar

Each person sees the teams they belong to under Teams in the sidebar. Every team has Hub, Metrics, Challenges and Milestones pages. Leadership also has Vision Board and Org Structure.

Teams directly under Leadership are listed at the top level of the sidebar, alongside Leadership itself. Deeper sub-teams nest under their parent.

To change the order, drag a team by its grip handle in Settings → Teams. Dragging works for Leadership and the teams directly under it.

Owners and Admins can open any team. If you’re an Owner or Admin and a team isn’t in your sidebar, click Browse teams below your team list and pick it to join.

Parent teams see their sub-teams

On a team that has sub-teams, the Milestones and Metrics pages add a roll-up below your own list. The milestones roll-up is headed Team Roll-Up — Milestone health from direct reports, with a card per sub-team. This is how a leadership team sees every department’s progress without opening each one.

Delete a team

Click the trash icon on the team’s row in Settings → Teams. There’s no confirmation, so check you have the right one.

  • Leadership can’t be deleted or renamed.
  • The team’s hub posts are deleted with it.
  • Its milestones, metrics, challenges, action items and syncs are kept, but no longer belong to a team.
  • Its sub-teams move up to the top level.

Next steps

Give each new team its first milestones and metrics, then schedule a sync for it. The founder guide to designing your org structure covers how to decide which teams you need.
